Harvesting

Parsley

There is a market gardener right next to our house. He had the food idea to open his fields to the public so we can pick our own fruits and vegetables. All you have to do is go there with a basket, a knife and a good pair of shoes. You can pick whatever you want and pay for you harvest when leaving the fields.

I love this concept. Going to pick your own fruits and vegetables is an experience that is fun and makes a lot of sense. We just take what we need. We are guaranteed that the produce is fresh, ripe and grown right next door! I find it so delightful: picking the vegetables directly and then cooking them. Being outside, in the middle of the fields, with my hands in the ground is my way to relax!

These products are fresh and in season. There is nothing better for cooking. What could be fresher than a peach picked directly from the tree or a carrot just out of the ground? We can choose them and pick them at perfect maturity, and thus enjoy all their flavor.

Giulia loves it when we go there, especially when there are lots of puddles she can jump into. For her, this outing is like a treasure hunt and the game aside, I like the idea that she discovers and learns new things – where fruit and vegetables come from, how they grow, why they don’t all grow in the same season … Also, I’m sure the kids are much more open to eating vegetables if they’re the ones they picked.

I hope that for Giulia, these picks will be like a small seed planted in her mind, which will blossom and make her aware of our connection with nature and the importance of eating fresh, seasonal and quality products.

For the moment she mainly enjoys running in the water, picking up pretty stones and leaves.

It is the end of summer. We are still enjoying the delicious sunny vegetables like zucchini, eggplant or tomates. It is also the peak season for raspberries, Giulia and me favorite fruit!
